Fall is the time of year when the air is getting chilly and the leaves are falling. It's when you start to bring everything from the outside to the inside of your home or into your garage to protect it from the colder weather that's coming. When making these moves, you could be bringing pests into your home unknowingly. You may be doing other things to lure pests such as ants to your home as well. Read on for ways to prevent ants from coming to your home this fall.
Clean Your Cushions
Before you bring your cushions into your home or your garage, clean them to remove any ants that may be crawling around on them. Beat them together to remove pests, or spray them down before the end of the season and leave them to dry in the sun. If your cushions have tears in them, inspect them for pests before you attempt to put them away (if you plan on keeping them or repairing them). Ants that may be on your cushions can come into your home or your garage and end up making their homes in your nice cushy home.
Remove Pests From Plants
If you are planning on bringing plants into your home that won't survive the winter outside, you need to be sure it doesn't contain pests. You can do this by sprinkling a mixture of boric acid and sugar around the base of the plant before bringing it indoors. You can also sprinkle diatomaceous earth around the base of the plant as well. Both of these can also be used once you bring the plant indoors, but be careful if you have small children or pets in your home. Both the boric acid and the diatomaceous earth are natural uses to kill ants or other pests as well.
Be Sure Your Home Is Sealed
Even if pests such as ants don't come in on your outdoor cushions or on your plants you bring in this fall, you could simply get ants because they've made their way inside because your home isn't sealed properly. If your home isn't sealed properly, you could have more than an ant problem, you could have all types of pests coming into your home. Be sure your home is sealed and protected. Seal windows, doors and even the doors on your attached garage. Seal basement windows and crawl space vents where pests can come in as well.
